Greener Grass

Watching children playing through the fencing posts at home

The Elementary School in play recess

My Mother holding firmly just in case I try to roam,

For I would like to join them I confess.

Their happy shouts of laughter at release from teacher’s voice,

Arithmetic and English out of mind

Rather be out playing if the school gave them that choice;

I feel my Mother tug me from behind.

For I am only three years old and prone to wander round

The week before I’d given all a fright,

In Elementary School ground that location I was found

To Elementary School kids great delight.

In my imagination I would think of the delight

Of entering those school buildings with the herd,

And I would watch them wistfully as they rushed out of sight

When end of recess bell chimes could be heard.

But as the years caught up with me to school I had to go

Then Mother had to push me out the door,

I’d saunter off dejectedly my measured tread was slow,

No longer now excited as before.

And from this was a lesson learned, for grass that oft seems green

On other side of fence and out of reach,

On closer look is just the same as in your yard you’ve seen

Another of life lessons us to teach!

  1. I like this post, Ian. It reminds me of a story I heard at a quaker meeting about someone who had never left his village who noticed that every morning the windows of a neighbouring village in the distance were coloured gold. Eventually he makes the trip – discovering on reaching the village that the gold due to sunlight reflecting – and no longer visible from within the new village. He looks back and sees the windows of his own village glinting in the afternoon sun.

  3. This piece reminded me of my own experience with school. As a migrant, I found it challenging enough until grade 4 when my teacher encouraged me by telling me I could be what ever I wanted to be….and he was right. I still love to study and attained my MA at 53! thanks for another delightful piece Ian.

  4. Love it. I can remember finding out that school was not anything near what I thought it would be. Sweet Ian you have the ability to say a lot with few words and I so enjoy reading your writings. Sometimes as I read your stories it is like I am watching a movie not reading. I wish I had such talent to use words with feeling and expression like you do. Hugs
