The Rain

I remember on a summer’s day when I was but a lad
How the days would start with singing showing all creation glad,
When the heat of summer mornings would draw moisture from the ground
And resulting evening showers sent it back with happy sound.

And it surely is a pleasure to remember it again
In our early childhood memories how we frolicked in the rain.

The sun in all its glory in communion with the sky
Took that mist ascending upward till it reached its ceiling high,
And it took it and compressed it into clouds of pure white
Then it sent them helter skelter in their proud celestial flight.

And it surely is a pleasure to remember it again
In our early childhood memories how it looked before the rain.

The winds then took their playmates in the process of their play
They repainted them with whispers and converted them to grey,
And soon a distant noise announced for all who chose to hear
They’d finished with their painting and the time of rain was near.

And it surely is a pleasure to remember it again
In our early childhood memories how it was before the rain.

The grey clouds covered heaven and they rumbled as they came
And they threw their bolts of lightning as they played a little game,
While they chased the wind now playing with the leaves upon the ground
And they threw their drops of water with a tinkling laughter sound.

And it surely is a pleasure to remember it again
In our early childhood memories how we frolicked in the rain.

  1. As a kid, I loved walking in the rain – used to freak out my mother as she feared that I would fall ill.

I still walk in the rain now – garnering stares from people who probably think that i must be weird…they don’t know what they’re missing, I reckon

  2. Another very nice poem sweet Ian. Memories of rain is all I have right now…it has been a very long time since I saw rain. Playing in the rain as a child was a lot of fun. Hugs
