Children of the cruel war stand dumb
As from above the bombs rain down,
Youngest sucking on her thumb
Thinking in the dust she’ll drown.
One girl rummaged from her treasure views
An IPad dusty, covered brown,
Wipes it clean to inputs daily news
Trusting battery won’t let down;
Hoping there to change how people act,
Find the culprits, put them all in jail!
Why must they be constantly attacked?
Can’t they hear the children wail?
Erring parties should be bought to heel
And put away without appeal!

In today’s times, we need poetry more than ever

There is an extra beauty in poetry that other forms of writing cannot match. Thanks for visiting.

Lovely poem Ian. But I disagree with some of the ensuing discussion which seems to imply that this is a new phenomena. I believe that throughout history there is evidence of man’s inhumanity to man. What about Robert Burns 1787 Dirge ‘Man was made to mourn:”
Many and sharp the num’rous ills
Inwoven with our frame!
More pointed still we make ourselves
Regret, remorse, and shame!
And man, whose heav’n-erected face
The smiles of love adorn, –
Man’s inhumanity to man
Makes countless thousands mourn!
Or further back Julius Caesar’s atrocities or Alexander the Great or Christians to Christians – the list goes on. I do agree that we, in todays’ world ,may not be much better; maybe we generally don’t crucify but we kill through blindness and apathy toward our starving brethren. I wonder, if communism isn’t the answer, how the haves can equably share with the have -nots. But, maybe I digress too far?

That was never the intent. Conflict goes back to earliest historical records. As for communism I think the book “Animal Farm” fairly accurately describes what life under communism is all about. Both systems, capitalism and communism exploit the masses for the sake of the few at the top of the heap. However under capitalism there are still some checks and balances, such as the vote, which forces greedy politicians to make concessions in order to get their vote. Out of the two evils capitalism is the lesser of the two as far as I’m concerned.

Absolutely, I merely mentioned communism as this is touted by some as THE solution.

Thank you, I do have a few new ones but enjoy story writing best. 🙂

Follow the money, they say, and you will find the ones with blood on their hands. Quite often these are the very same people society holds up as role models – priests (of all denominations), politicians, big business and bankers.

It’s hard to find public figures you can trust and have confidence in these days Eric, fortunately there are still a few sane voices to try and restrain greed and inhumanity.
